Diplomacy embodies the practice of international affairs in its most traditional form. Over the past years, new and innovative approaches for countries and actors to engage across borders and cooperate in the global arena have appeared on the diplomacy stage. Given that they break the boundaries and roles of ‘old-school’ diplomacy, they can be seen to disrupt and newly define this vital sector, going beyond the concept of country representatives negotiating on borders, trade, war and peace. Diplomacy is complex and embodies more options of engagement than one might initially think. These innovative and less traditional forms of diplomacy will be presented to students interested to learn more about the potential of this thriving sector.
At the beginning of the panel, experts representing the innovative approaches to diplomacy, consisting of climate diplomacy, culinary diplomacy, start-up diplomacy, and science diplomacy, will outline the idea behind their disruptive approach and how it succeeds in dusting off diplomacy. A pitch idea exchange will follow, enabling demo participants, active in the broad field of the innovation community, a chance to present and get on-the-spot expert feedback. Demos participants will demonstrate how to creatively connect and apply innovations in diplomacy in practice–wrapped in a compelling story.
